In Somnolent Ruin finds Draconian leaning fully into the tension that has always defined them: funeral-weight doom, gothic melancholy, and death-metal bite held in careful balance. It is immediately heavy, but never clumsy; every slow step feels intentional.
What lifts the record is performance. Anders Jacobsson sounds vicious and corroded, while Lisa Johansson brings clarity, ache, and dramatic lift without turning the album soft. Together they sharpen the band’s central contrast instead of merely decorating it.
The guitars hit with real force, stacking thunderous rhythm work against bleeding melodic leads, while the bass and drums give the material heft and movement. Even at its slowest, the album breathes; the rhythm section keeps these songs alive from underneath.
Songwriting is where Draconian cash in that control. The material feels cohesive, emotionally dense, and strong at carrying tension across long, deliberate structures. Nothing here sounds rushed or careless, and the atmosphere lands exactly as intended.
Its weakness is originality. Draconian are refining a familiar identity rather than expanding it, and the album’s consistency can blur some individual moments together. Still, when the execution is this assured, familiarity stops feeling limiting and starts feeling earned.
